Downsizing & Moving: Preparing for Your Transition to Community Living

December 17, 2025 · Community Living

A senior woman stands in a living room with packing boxes, deciding what to keep.
Letting go isn’t about losing memories, but making room for new ones.

Making Tough Decisions: What to Keep, What to Let Go

Deciding what to keep during a major move requires honesty and foresight. The goal is to furnish your new home beautifully without overfilling it. Ask yourself these questions for each item:

Staying objective is key, as being aware of common downsizing mistakes can save you significant time and energy during your transition.

  1. Do I use this regularly (at least once a month)?
  2. Does this bring me genuine joy or serve a vital purpose?
  3. Do I have space for this in my new home?
  4. Would I buy this again today?

If the answer to most of these is “no,” it is a strong indicator that the item can go. For sentimental items, consider taking a photo of them, or passing them on to family members who will cherish them. Many people find solace in knowing their items continue to be loved and used.

Consider the “one year rule” for clothing and items, and the “rule of three” for certain categories, such as three pairs of jeans or three serving platters. This helps set clear boundaries. Remember, you are curating a new beginning, not preserving the past in its entirety.

“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.”

Options for Items You Are Letting Go Of

You have several excellent options for items that will not make the move with you:

  • Donate: Charities gladly accept gently used clothing, furniture, household goods, and books. This is a rewarding way to give items a second life.
  • Sell: For higher-value items, consider consignment shops, online marketplaces, or estate sales. This can also provide a small financial boost for your move.
  • Gift to Family/Friends: Offer specific items to loved ones who might appreciate them. This ensures items stay within your circle.
  • Recycle/Dispose: Properly recycle electronics, hazardous waste, and paper. Dispose of true trash.
